Standard newspaper’s longest serving journalist retires

Standard Media Group’s longest serving journalist Isaack Omulo Okoth is retiring this month after working for the company for close to three decades.  Sources at the Standard Group say the veteran sports writer and editor last evening bid goodbye to his colleagues, most of whom went through his hands at the Standard newspaper.

Mr Omulo applied for an early exit last year when a voluntary retirement plan was offered, but the company denied him the chance on the back of his wealth of experience in sports. “He writes and edits the genre of sports most current reporters and editors won’t such as golf and cricket,” said a sports writer who spoke to this paper in confidence.

His departure now leaves the sports desk under the watch of two editors: Robin Toskin and Bismark Mutahi, both of whom are silently jostling for the position. Insiders say top management is rooting for Mr Mutahi, who is a strong and keen sub-editor. Mr Toskin, seen to be an all-rounder  in writing, editing and even broadcasting, is being propped up for the Group Sports Editor.
