Huawei smartphones have been trying to make foray into the Kenyan market over the past few years. It started will low-cost phones and many people did not take it seriously at a time when the big boys of the market, such as Nokia and Samsung, called the shots.

But it has slowly been winning over fans, as it ventured into the high-end smartphones segment.

I’m not the tech-savvy type and so I love going with the crowd when it comes to gadgets. But nothing beats curiosity as a force to trying new ideas. So when recently I picked the Huawei Mate 8 smartphone, my mind was ready for anything. And anything here had a negative ring to it.

After spending a month or so with the Mate 8, I underwent some kind of transformation on realising what this Chinese tech giant called Huawei can produce.

Physically, the Mate 8 is stunning. It’s one of those bold and beautiful smartphones to come on the market. At six inches and with a huge screen that rivals a mini-tablet (call it a phablet if you wish) Huawei manages to offer both the curved glass corners that are currently in fashion and the chamfered edges.

Android system runs latest apps

The phone runs on the Android operating system, which is currently the most popular platform on the market. Given that the phone is still new on the market, it is able to run the most recent apps and software just well.

The phone’s metal body is 157.10 mm high, 80.60 mm wide, and has a depth of 7.90 mm, markedly thinner than the average smartphone released in the last one year –and can it take a case and maintain the thinness. With a weight of 185 grams, it’s much heavier than most smartphones its size, but the extra mass pays back through phone’s massive battery that lasts nearly two days with average use.

As a journalist I do quite a lot of typing and surfing on-the-go and the large screen and long lasting battery of the Mate 8 have become great companions. The phone has an impressive 32 GB of internal storage, making it an ideal choice if you do lots of music, videos, and pictures. If 32 GB isn’t enough, no worry, there are other size options, or you can increase its storage an additional 128 GB with a microSD card.

Soft touch-screen & finger print sensor

The touch screen is very soft that you could easily double click at times without knowing, especially if you are used to phnone screens that require some knocking to pass a command – and that makes the Mate 8 not just cool gadget but a phone for executives and the aspirational. It makes you look cool and big, literally.

Its camera, from a lay man’s language, is great. Since I got the Mate 8, I no longer need to carry a camera around all the time unless in extreme circumstances.

The fingerprint sensor is located at the back top.

One of the best aspects of the Mate 8 is its fingerprint sensor on the back. It’s is one the best executions on the market as it is always on, blazing fast, and rarely returns an error. The sensor unlocks the smartphone and takes you to the homescreen in an instant.

The Huawei Mate 8 is a premium device and, as you may have already figured, it surely doesn’t come cheap, starting from Ksh50,000. But for the price you pay for it, you are certainly treated to an excellent user experience and some of the best specifications in the industry.

Experiencing it is the only way to prove it. You don’t need persuation to realise that the Mate 8 certainly makes good office, class or even house/room Mate!
